After 1923: Which Dutton Family Links Are Canon and Which Are Theory

John Dutton II's parents are Spencer Dutton and his wife Alexandra, if you go by what 1923's series finale shows and what almost every fan assumes. In the final episode, Alexandra gives birth to a premature son in a Bozeman hospital in 1924 and names him John, after Spencer's late brother. She dies soon after, and Jacob and Cara help raise the boy while Spencer takes over the ranch. That baby is the only Dutton child of the right age with the right name to grow up into Dabney Coleman's character, the father of Kevin Costner's John Dutton III. One caveat: no episode has actually said "this baby is John Dutton II," and Taylor Sheridan has never confirmed it. Below, every link is marked as either shown on screen or theory.

How to read this tree

Solid lines are canon: you can point to an aired scene, line of dialogue, or Elsa's narration. Dashed lines are theory: press or fan reasoning, names seen only in stills from unaired episodes, and the one identity link everyone assumes but nobody has confirmed. Where a show never gave a date, we left it blank. We also use full Roman numerals, because "John Dutton" alone can mean four different men.

Generation one: the 1883 Duttons

James Dutton (Tim McGraw) and Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill) lead the family from Texas to Montana in 1883. They have two children on the trail: Elsa (Isabel May) and young John (Audie Rick). Elsa dies in the finale, and the family settles where she is buried. That spot becomes the ranch, and Elsa goes on to narrate 1923 too (Does Elsa die in 1883?). James's sister Claire (Dawn Olivieri) and her daughter Mary Abel also make the trip. Neither survives it.

James's brother Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) and his wife Cara (Helen Mirren) do not appear in 1883. The first episode of 1923 explains how they got to Montana. After James died in the 1890s, Margaret wrote to Jacob asking for help. In Elsa's words, a year later Jacob "arrived to find my mother frozen in a snow drift, her two boys half-starved and barely able to speak. He raised them as his own." Jacob and Cara never have children of their own on screen.

Generation two: John Dutton I, Spencer and Alexandra

John Dutton I is the boy from 1883 grown up, played by James Badge Dale in 1923, where he is credited as John Dutton Sr. He is married to Emma (Marley Shelton), and their son is Jack Dutton (Darren Mann). John I is killed by Banner Creighton's men in Season 1, Episode 3, and Emma dies two episodes later.

Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) is James and Margaret's youngest child, born after the family settled in Montana. The World War I veteran turned big-game hunter spends most of 1923 trying to get home from Africa, where he meets Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer). The two marry in Season 1.

The finale's closing narration gives us the only hard dates in this generation. Alexandra "was born on April Fool's Day, 1901, in Oxfordshire, England, and laid to rest March 29, 1924." Spencer joins her "45 years later," which puts his death in 1969. His birth year is never stated on screen, so we left it blank.

The same narration adds a branch many viewers missed: Spencer "never remarried. Took the comfort of a widow and made another boy, refused to marry her. And one day, the widow was gone." So Spencer has two sons. The second has no name, no dates, and has never been seen.

Generation three: Jack, baby John and Spencer's second son

Jack and Elizabeth. Jack marries Elizabeth Strafford (Michelle Randolph) in Season 1. She loses a pregnancy in Season 1 and is pregnant again in Season 2. Banner Creighton's men shoot Jack on the road to Livingston in Season 2, Episode 6, and his body is found and buried in the finale. Elizabeth leaves the ranch still pregnant. That child is never born on screen, which is why some fans keep Jack's line in the running.

Baby John. This is Spencer and Alexandra's son, born in the finale, "A Dream and a Memory." His exact birth date is never given, but it has to be in early 1924, right before Alexandra's burial. Jacob steps back from running the ranch to help Cara raise him.

The missing link: is baby John really John Dutton II?

This is the dashed line that matters most. CBR's October 9 piece says the finale "confirms" Spencer and Alexandra as John Dutton II's parents. We think that goes a step too far.

Why it is almost certainly him:

• John I is dead and his only child is Jack. Jack is dead, and his child is unborn and headed east with Elizabeth.
• Spencer's son is named John, born in Montana, and raised on the ranch by Jacob and Cara.
• The timing works. A man born in 1924 can be the elderly father Dabney Coleman plays in his one Yellowstone episode, Season 2's "Sins of the Father."

Why it is still technically open:

• No line of dialogue links baby John to Coleman's character.
• Brandon Sklenar and Julia Schlaepfer told USA Today in April 2025 that only Sheridan can confirm it. Schlaepfer said, "The only person who could confirm that is Taylor Sheridan himself, out of his mouth." Sklenar said, "John's a popular name."
• Yellowstone credits Coleman's character as "John Dutton Sr." The "II" is a fan convention, not a credit. (More: Who are John Dutton II's parents?)

Our call: Spencer and Alexandra are John Dutton II's parents, labeled "strongly implied" until 1944 or Sheridan says it outright. Our 1944 explainer covers what that show might answer.

Generations four to seven: the Yellowstone family

John Dutton II (Dabney Coleman) appears in a single flashback in Yellowstone Season 2, Episode 10. That episode establishes him as John Dutton III's father. His wife has never been shown or named.

John Dutton III (Kevin Costner, with Josh Lucas as young John) runs the ranch through five seasons and is killed in Season 5, Episode 9. (See Who killed John Dutton?) His wife Evelyn (Gretchen Mol) dies after a riding accident shown in flashback. (How did Evelyn Dutton die?)

Their children:

• Lee Dutton (Dave Annable), the eldest, killed in the first episode. (What happened to Lee?)
• Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly), married to Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) in the Season 4 finale. Beth cannot have children (here is why). She and Rip raise Carter (Finn Little), who is family but not a blood Dutton.
• Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley), adopted. His biological father is Garrett Randall (Will Patton). Jamie has a son, Lucas, with Christina. Jamie is killed in the series finale.
• Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes), married to Monica (Kelsey Asbille). Their son is Tate (Brecken Merrill). Their second son dies as a newborn after Monica's car crash in Season 5, Episode 1.

Marshals and Dutton Ranch: where the family is now

The Dutton line now continues in two spinoffs. Dutton Ranch follows Beth, Rip and Carter in Texas. Marshals follows Kayce and Tate in Montana. The Marshals premiere revealed that Monica died of cancer before the series begins (full answer).

New names on the Marshals headstones

Taste of Country spotted new headstones in the family cemetery in October 6 stills from Marshals Season 2, Episode 2, "End of Watch." The episode airs October 11 in the US, so until then these stay in the theory column:

• Chance Dutton, 1929-1990. The name was seen on an older stone earlier in the franchise. Now it has dates. Taste of Country asks whether he could be Spencer's unnamed second son. The dates would fit, but nothing on screen says so.
• Margaret Dutton, born 1904. This is not Faith Hill's Margaret. Taste of Country's "working theory" is that she was a daughter of John I and Emma. 1923 never mentions a daughter, so we draw that line dashed.
• John James Dutton, died August 23, 2023. This is Kayce and Monica's baby from Yellowstone Season 5. The baby is canon. His middle name and death date come only from the headstone.

If the episode shows them clearly, we will make these lines solid.

Contested points

• The seven generations. Per Screen Rant, Jamie calls John III a fifth-generation rancher in Season 5, and the 1883 prophecy talks about seven generations. But the Spencer line runs James, Spencer, John II, John III, Kayce, Tate: six names. Some fans count Jacob as a generation of ranchers; others suspect a missing Dutton between John II and John III. Nothing on screen settles it.
• CBR's other slips. The same piece describes John I as Jacob's brother (Jacob is his uncle), says John I "dies childless" while also naming Jack as his son, and spells the baby "Jon." Elle, What to Watch and TVLine all use John.
