Spoilers for Season 2, Episode 1, "All Hat No Cattle."
The Marshals Season 2 premiere gave fans a lot to fight about. We read through the episode discussion thread on r/Marshals_TV_Series and sorted what people were saying into the debates that kept coming back. This is one thread from one fan community, not a poll, so treat it as a snapshot of the conversation rather than a verdict. We paraphrase the comments and leave out usernames. Where something is confirmed, we say so. Where it is a fan theory, we say that too.
If you want the plot first, start with our Episode 1 recap.

Was Dolly in on her father's plan?
This was the biggest split in the thread. Before the premiere, many fans assumed Dolly Weaver was complicit in her father's land grab and the kidnapping of Tate. Some commenters read her attempts to bond with Kayce on the way to Wyoming as a performance, and one went as far as accusing her of knowing about a massive fraud scheme. That last claim is fan speculation, not something the show has established.
After the episode, opinion softened. Several people said they expected her to be involved and were surprised to learn she was in the dark. Others held their position that she was "not completely" in the dark. The middle view, which got the most agreement, was that she may have known pieces of what her father was doing without understanding the whole thing.
Recaps describe her as helping Kayce reach Tate before being caught up in her father's escape, though accounts vary on the details. We cover what happened in the recap.

Why kill Dolly off?
Reactions to her death ranged from relief to anger, and a lot of surprise that the show went through with it so fast.
- "She was written out to make room for Andrea." One commenter felt Dolly was killed mainly so a Kayce and Andrea storyline could happen. Others had assumed Dolly would be Kayce's love interest this season, and were corrected by a reply that Kayce visibly pulled away when she leaned in.
- "Why would it affect him?" A few fans argued that Kayce never liked her, so her death should not weigh on him. Luke Grimes sees it differently. He told SheKnows that although the two never got close, "he opens up just a little bit, and then that happens," and that it feeds Kayce's belief that he brings misfortune to the people around him.
- The punishment. Many fans approved of Kayce making Tom Weaver live with what he caused rather than killing him. A common take was that it is the harshest outcome available.
Why does Andrea stay?
Fans wanted this explained, and they offered three readings:
1. Loyalty to the team. This is the reading closest to the episode itself. The recaps we read have Andrea saying she has never been on a team that fights for each other like this one.
2. Something personal with Kayce. Many commenters joked about it, and a few meant it. Others pushed back that Kayce is nowhere near ready after Monica and now Dolly.
3. A confession she did not make. Some thought her late visit to East Camp, right before her flight, was her about to say something and backing off when she saw Kayce and Dolly together.
A more specific theory is worth passing on carefully. One commenter pointed out that Kayce had left Garrett's cowboy hat in Andrea's locker, and guessed she stopped by to thank him. That is a fan observation of a scene, and we cannot confirm the intent. Collider reports that the premiere confirms Weaver was behind the barn fire tied to Garrett "Double G" Garvey's death, so Garrett's absence is clearly part of the episode's emotional weather.
On the romance question, a moderator on that subreddit argued that Kayce and Andrea will not get together this season, citing Grimes's comments that Kayce is still wearing his wedding ring. We have not verified the details of that claim. Grimes has talked in interviews about when the ring might come off, and he has said the production is still thinking it through.
Who can "raise an army"?
Kayce's line about knowing someone who can raise an army set off the most speculation. The leading guesses were:
- Rip Wheeler, the obvious fan favorite.
- A former teammate of Kayce's from the Yellowstone universe, with one fan suggesting a specific character.
- Jimmy, mentioned by a few people hoping for a return.
All of this is theory. Nothing in the episode names the person, and we will update this post if Episode 2 does.

Texas, Wyoming and the crossover that wasn't
When Tate left with Weaver in the Season 1 finale, many fans connected "Texas" to the Dutton Ranch crossover they were hoping for. When the story landed in Wyoming, some felt let down. One commenter argued that Wyoming was always the plan and Texas was a red herring, because Weaver had mentioned working on his grandparents' ranch there. That is a reasonable reading, but it is a fan's reading.
The official word is clearer. Showrunner Spencer Hudnut said before the premiere that a crossover is not happening in Season 2 because of the logistics, though he called it "definitely a goal." We covered that in our premiere guide.

What fans loved
- Luke Grimes. Several people called it his best work on the show, and one called it the best episode because it was mostly Kayce being Kayce.
- The pace. Fans liked that the premiere picked up exactly where the finale ended, and that it moved fast.
- Kayce's standoff with Weaver. The "I've heard stories about the Duttons" exchange got quoted back several times.
- Cal's new look. Yes, there was a lot of relief about the cap.
What fans criticized
The complaints were mostly about plausibility and structure.
- A tidy reset. One viewer said the episode felt like it should have been the Season 1 finale, because every main thread wrapped up so neatly that Episode 2 can start fresh.
- Action logic. Fans questioned Kayce holding off a group of armed men, the lack of a spare magazine, an abrupt cut in the horseback rescue, and a scope cap that seemed to change between shots. These are viewer observations about continuity, not confirmed errors.
- Tom's plan. A few people did not follow why driving down a blind hill made sense, and some found his end anticlimactic. One commenter did offer a reading of the contract plot: if Tom planned to kill Kayce and Tate, no one would be left to challenge the sale.
- Tate. Some viewers found his reaction after the rescue flat, and wanted more of the father and son bond.
- The Belle and Cal cliffhanger. One viewer felt the show played up the danger and then resolved it with no real consequence. Others were simply glad they were fine.
The thread also had its share of people who found the show unrealistic or poorly acted, so it is not all praise.
Our take
The premiere does what a first episode after a cliffhanger has to do: it pays off every thread at once, and it pays a price for it. The Dolly death and the Weaver standoff give Kayce real consequences. The cost is that the story now has a lot of cleared ground, and Season 2 has 18 to 20 episodes to fill. How the show uses that space will say more than any one reaction thread.
That is our opinion, and the fans above have plenty of their own.
What to watch for in Episode 2
Episode 2, "End of Watch," airs Sunday, October 11, at 8 p.m. ET on CBS, and you can watch the sneak peek in our recap. One practical note: several viewers reported that the premiere did not start until around 8:51 p.m. ET because of a live-sports overrun. If you are watching live, check your local listings, or stream it on Paramount+ the next day.
