How Mariano Entered the Story
In Episode 3, "Act of God Business," Beulah Jackson receives a phone call that changes how viewers read her character.
Until that point, Beulah looks like the person who controls the room. She controls 10 Petal, her family, and the local power structure. She can threaten, smile, flatter, and punish without seeming rattled.
Then Mariano calls.
Beulah's reaction suggests the caller is not just an employee. Mariano speaks like someone with leverage. The conversation includes a reference to moving a lot of "cattle" that month — a word that sounds less like ranching and more like a coded transaction.
The credits identify the voice as Mariano Reyes, played by Raoul Max Trujillo.
That credit matters because Joaquin's last name is Reyes too.
Mariano and Joaquin: Father and Son
Mariano is Joaquin Reyes's biological father. Joaquin was adopted and raised by Beulah, and the shared surname is the show's least subtle clue.
That parentage leaves Joaquin standing between two worlds:

The Young Mariano: Episode 7 Flashbacks
Episode 7's flashbacks to 1981 show a younger Mariano (Bobby Soto) as a ranch hand at 10 Petal. He served as a protector for young Beulah — polite, seemingly sensitive, devoted.
The flashbacks reveal that young Beulah was assaulted by Luke. Mariano was part of the world around that trauma. He searched for Beulah afterward. He became part of the emotional fallout around her pregnancy and Luke's death.
He was later banished from the ranch. How he travelled from that devoted young protector to the man who rattles Beulah with a phone call is the one part of his history the show still refuses to explain — but it means Mariano knows the version of Beulah's past that the public 10 Petal story has erased.
El Padrino: What the Finale Revealed
The Season 1 finale, "El Padrino," opens in Mexico — and Mariano Reyes finally steps on screen in the present day, decades after being sent away from 10 Petal.
He introduces himself to a small community as El Padrino, Spanish for "The Godfather." His men steal cattle from local ranchers, which had been the assumption for eight episodes. What had not been shown is what happens next.
Select animals are marked, cut open, and used as drug mules. Fentanyl is sewn inside their bodies, the wounds are stitched closed, and forged veterinary paperwork walks the herd across the border into Texas — straight to 10 Petal Ranch, where the marked animals are opened up again and the product is handed to Mariano's distributors.
The cattle were never the business. They were the packaging.
The Pipeline, Confirmed
With the finale on the table, the clues from the whole season resolve into one operation:
Mariano runs the Mexican side of the pipeline. The Jacksons steal cattle in Mexico, move them across the border, and forge the paperwork. Mariano is the other end of it — and the reason it exists.
He knows Beulah killed a man. Beulah killed Luke, and Mariano knows. That is permanent leverage, and it is why she could never simply cut him loose no matter how much his calls unsettled her.
His cattle brought the FMD outbreak. The infected bull that devastated Beth and Rip's herd came through this route. Livestock that were never properly inspected entered the state because the paperwork was fake.
He is why 10 Petal survived the 2010 drought. When legitimate ranchers lost their herds, the Jacksons restocked with stolen Mexican cattle at a fraction of the cost. Mariano's pipeline made that possible — which means the ranch's respectability was bought with his money for a very long time.
Where Mariano Leaves Season 1
The finale hands him everything.
Rob-Will is dead. After Beulah named her volatile younger son as her successor, Mariano told Joaquin that his adoptive brother had to die. The show follows Joaquin driving to the house and then cuts away — the death arrives through Oreana, who hears the gunshots upstairs and runs down into a pool of her father's blood. Joaquin is bound to him. Whatever Joaquin was before the Episode 8 phone call, he is now his father's instrument. The Jackson succession is void and who controls 10 Petal is an open question.
Carter is gone. In the closing minutes, Carter — alone at the house and adrift after his disastrous week in Episode 8 — hears a knock late at night and opens the door believing Oreana has come back for him. Mariano's men tie him up and throw him into a van. Mariano then calls Beth to confirm he has the boy.
The season ends on its mission statement. Rip reads the play correctly — "They don't want Carter, they want us" — and Beth answers: "Then they're gonna f---ing get us."
So the answer to the question the season spent nine episodes asking is not that Mariano replaced Beulah as the villain. It is that he explains her. 10 Petal was never the empire; it was the retail end of his.
